 Pediatric Cardiology: Enhancing the Role of the School Nurse - Cassie Wellwood, BSN, PHN, RN, Valley Children’s Healthcare Heart Center Clinic.
Overview: This presentation provides an overview of common cardiac conditions seen in the   pediatric population, including treatment and intervention.  It also includes information on how  the school nurse can help the cardiac child succeed in school through assessing, monitoring identifying emergencies, and accessing appropriate resources such as an IEP or 504.
Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, the school nurse will be able to: Describe the comprehensive cardiac assessment and vital sign measurements used in evaluating the pediatric cardiac patient; Identify key criteria for notifying emergency support (911) and/or the  Cardiology Clinic; List PE requirements and restrictions that may be applied to the pediatric cardiac patient; Identify common sports-related cardiac conditions; discuss IEP and 504 considerations and how they relate to the pediatric congenital heart defect population

Overview:  This presentation provides an overview of Section 504 and in the school nurse’s role in providing accommodations and support.
Objectives: Upon completion, the participant will be able to:  Explain eligibility requirements for Section 504; Discuss the Section 504 process from beginning to end; Develop an accommodation plan; Discuss how the nursing process supports the IEP and Section 504 Planning.
